My friends and I bought a Gamecube and we really enjoy playing some Mario Kart: Double Dash & Super Mario Bros Melee.
We would love to know if there are any other fun Gamecube games to play, it would be best if it would be enjoyable for two players. The kind of game doesn't matter too much for me, anything fun will do. Just to confirm, I'm not looking for single player games, but anything competitive and fun for at least two players. Thanks for any help/advice.:) I already own Need For Speed and SSX on Tour but did not enjoy those games. Edit: I also own Mario Party but I'm done with that game. If you liked Mario Kart: DD then you should enjoy Kirby's Airride. Its a 3rd person perspective racer.
Big variety of vehicles to drive (called Stars) that have pros and cons. You can do regular racing or battle racing, or other kinds of races in which whoever can glide the farthest wins. It was my favorite game on the GC. It even has an in-game achievement system which unlocks different color Kirbys you can play as and new types of Stars to drive. It also has a City mode where you drive around a small city collecting stat increases for a set amount of time, then moves you on to a challenge, which can be either preset by you, or set to random. If random, it'll give you a hint as to what type of challenge you'll be doing as you collect stats. By far the best racing game I've ever played.
Also it has an entirely separate racing mode that's top-down view, complete with its own separate list of power ups that'll very much remind you of Mario Kart. Highly recommended. Super Monkey Ball 1/2 perhaps? They have several multiplayer modes such as trying to land on platforms or fighting eachother.
Metroid Prime 2, I haven't played it, but it has multiplayer IIRC. James Bond games, I haven't tried any of them, but I think they have multiplayer. Zelda Four Swords, I want it, but I've never found it for a good price, I'm pretty certain it has multiplayer.
Sonic Heroes, (I think that's the name of it.) was quite some time since I played it, can't remember much. Fifa, nice game, but it takes up tons of space!. Mario sport games, haven't tried any, but these should have multiplayer. I'm sorry for not being able to give better explanations, but for a console two generations old, I remember quite alot.
One game that has surprisingly good multiplayer for GCN is Billy Hatcher & the Giant Egg. You basically roll eggs around, trying to hatch them by rolling up fruit as well as squishing the other players. Each egg contains a certain power-up when hatched that can be used to help kill your enemies. A lot of multiplayer levels are unlocked by playing the single player though, which isn't terrible but isn't super amazing either. If you have a GBA (or SP/Micro, can't be a DS unfortunately because you need the special GBA-GCN controller link cable), I'd also recommend Pac-Man Vs.
it's a multiplayer-only game in which one person plays normal Pac-Man on the GBA screen while the other players control individual ghosts trying to team up and kill him before he eats all the pellets. It's not available in stores but you can usually find it for like $5 on eBay.
It was designed by Shigeru Miyamoto himself and Mario is the announcer for some reason. You can definitely see elements of the asymmetric off-TV design philosophy they went with on the Wii U. If you want to shell out the cash for GBAs & GBA-GCN link cables for everyone, Zelda: Four Swords Adventure is great fun with friends. It's basically a co-op Zelda game that focuses a lot on the multiplayer puzzle aspect. Everyone requires their own GBA because the GBAs become individual player screens once they go into a cave or house while the TV screen still shows the outside.
It's an interesting idea but it's limited by all the hardware required, and it's super finicky: if just one GBA gets unplugged or the battery dies you lose all your progress on the level. However, if you can get it all set up, it's a blast to play with friends. There's even a competitive aspect in trying to get the most money per level, and there are lots of opportunities to be a complete dick and grief the shit out of your friends.
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle also has okay multiplayer but it gets kind of stale after a few times, so I can't recommend it too much. My recommendations, most of which are probably already mentioned elsewhere: Nicely priced:. Any Tony Hawk game, all the ones on GameCube are good. Aggressive Inline is very similar to the Tony Hawk games, one of the best in the same genre. 007 Nightfire is great for multiplayer fun, closest to Goldeneye 007 you'll get and has aged very well.
Very affordable despite all the praise it gets. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. Gauntlet-style beat-em-up stuff, very fun in co-op. Sadly there's a sequel but it never came out for GC.
Not very expensive either I think. Metroid Prime 2's multiplayer is actually surprisingly very fun. It's on the cheaper side too. F-Zero GX is a fantastic game. The story mode is hard as shit but it's a fun multiplayer game as well.
More of a straight up racing title than Mario Kart. It's also pretty cheap I think. FF: Crystal Chronicles is quite fun, has 4-player IIRC. A little more expensive:. TimeSplitters 2 and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect.
Both are fantastic games and you can play co-op all the way through the story mode just like in Perfect Dark. Unfortunately they're a little more pricey. I think you can get TS2 for like $15-ish, but from what I remember Future Perfect runs for like $30+ especially on GameCube. Overall, I'd say DEFINITELY pick up Nightfire if you want some 4-player shooting, it's huge fun. Single player is good too. Tony Hawk is always a blast and you can't go wrong with it, so easy to pick up and play.
TimeSplitters is fun in multiplayer, but it really shines with the co-op play too and is worth the money.
